New Bremen Parks Department
The Village of New Bremen began a full time Parks Department in 2001, to provide for increased focus on this important Quality of Life issue. The Department provides for recreation activities and maintenance and repair of the ballfields, ground cover, trees, plantings, playground equipment, and the Public Pool. Numerous recreational and community events are held throughout the year and the schedule of events can be found on www.newbremen.com as they are announced. There are five parks within the village, of which three are full service with shelter houses, picnic tables and restrooms. Bremenfest Park is located in the northeast part of the Village and was established in 1980 by the Bremenfest organization, which was founded in order to improve parks and recreation opportunities in New Bremen. This full service park features four well maintained ball diamonds, playground equipment, and two shelter houses - one with kitchen and both with restrooms that have flush toilets.
Lions Park is located in the central part of town, directly west of Lock One. It is a full service park with shelter house with picnic tables, playground equipment and restrooms with flush toilets. The Lions Club began this park in the 1970's and turned this over to the Village Parks Department for continued operation in 2004. An exceptional facility is the Crown Pavilion located on South Street west of the Miami & Erie Canal. This structure was moved from Indian Lake and reconstructed in 2003. It was originally built about 1910 and was later enclosed and used as a roller rink. Due to its large 100' diameter it is suitable for concerts, weddings, pumpkin weigh-offs and all sorts of events. Due to the types of events with larger crowds hosted at the Crown Pavilion, there are no picnic tables. Restrooms are available at the nearby Lions Park and Jaycees Park. The Crown Pavilion is dedicated by Jim and Eileen Dicke to the Past, Present and Future Employees of Crown Equipment Corporation. Southeast of the Crown Pavilion is the Jaycees Park, also established in the 1970's. This is a full service park but with a bonus in winter when an ice skating rink is set up. Jaycees Park is also home to the Annual Firemen's Picnic on the fourth Saturday of July. The Miami and Erie Trail, a linear park, extends from Lock One south along the Canal to the south corporation limits of the Village. The Trail is built upon the towpath of the historic canal, which is on the west side of the canal the entire way through the Village. For walking and jogging, the Trail is a wonderful asset to the community. The Trail, part of the Heritage Trail System, continues over two miles towards Minster. South of Amsterdam Road there is a pedestrian bridge and a walking path that branches to the east to the YMCA. The Village also maintains the St. Paul's Baseball Diamond at the corner of North Herman and First Streets during the summer baseball season. There are also tennis courts on Cherry Street south of the elementary school. Kim Boroff is the year around Parks Department Superintendent, assisted by four seasonal people, a recreation manager during the baseball season, and seasonal lifeguards during the summer. Lock One Park is the very prominent area between the main intersection
in town (State Routes 66 and 274), the Public Library to the south,
and directly west of the Public Library is Lock One North of the
Miami & Erie Canal. Lock One was at the summit of the
Nineteenth Century canal system, and from here the canal system
stepped down to the Maumee River near Toledo. In Lock One
Park is a beautifully landscaped area of paver bricks and the Watershed
Fountain where the water from a small fountain divides: part
of the water flows to the south and ultimately the Ohio and Mississippi
Rivers and the other part flows north, ultimately to Lake Erie
and the Great Lakes.
