Grand Lake St. Marys and Lake Loramie

Want to spend a day or two at the lake? New Bremen is in the perfect spot. It’s right between two popular Ohio lakes: Grand Lake St. Marys and Lake Loramie.

Grand Lake St. Marys

Grand Lake St. Marys is a man-made lake that dates back to the 1830s. One of the largest man-made lakes at the time, it served as a reservoir for the Miami Erie Canal.

Today, it’s a popular destination for visitors across the region. You can enjoy a day out on the lake boating or water-skiing, or a quiet morning fishing. Around the lake, you’ll find hiking trails and parks, as well as treatment trains and wetlands to help boost the lake’s water quality.

The lake is also the perfect place for bird-watchers and nature enthusiasts, as the lake and its shores are teeming with wildlife. Most days, you’ll find people quietly waiting on the banks of the lake for a glimpse of the bald eagles that have made the area their home.

To plan your day at the lake, visit the Grand Lake St. Marys State Park website or the region’s visitors’ website.

Lake Loramie

South of New Bremen is Lake Loramie, another reservoir lake for the Miami Erie Canal.

The lake offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, camping, boating and picnicking. You’ll also find plenty of family-friendly activities at the Lake Loramie State Park, located at the southwest corner of the lake.

If you enjoy hunting and fishing, the lake is the place to be. Fishing is allowed with a valid Ohio fishing license and hunting is permitted in season, as long as you’re within designated areas and have a valid Ohio hunting license.
